Shopping

The old village of Mojacar (Mojácar Pueblo) is home to a surprising number of interesting shops and boutiques, all tucked away in its plazas and winding streets. On offer are gold and silver jewellery, original clothes and a huge range of traditional crafts. Not a single chain-store can be found. If you need to rest, there is a cafe on almost every corner, each with its own special charm. If you can’t find that special something in the old village, then the local bus will take you down to the beach where you can explore the local shopping mall.

DelfosA short drive from Mojacar village is Delfos – a unique mixture of bar, art gallery and antique shop in the heart of rural Mojacar.

Excursions

Secret Spain. Costa Almeria Tours offers the best in day and evening trips, fiestas and sightseeing excursions to reveal to you the magic of this remote corner of Andalucia. Small private groups catered for.

Sorbas Caves. Sparkling gypsum caves not far from Sorbas. Cuevas de Sorbas offer several guided routes of varying difficulty. Experienced spelunkers can also explore by prior arrangement

Mini-Hollywood. Western film set, complete with Wild West shows, out in the Tabernas Desert. The Oasys Theme Park also includes a zoo and pool area and makes a great day’s outing for the whole family.

Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Cabo de Gata is a place of scenic beauty with 50 km of wild coastline and magnificant beaches. The salt flats are home to a colony of pink flamingos.

Tabernas Desert. Europe’s only desert. The stark landscape is especially beautiful in the red light of the setting sun. These “Badlands” have been used as the location for many films, including several Spaghetti Westerns featuring Clint Eastwood, Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (featuring many Mojacar residents as extras). Exodus was recently filmed in the area.

Garrucha. This typical fishing port is close by and well worth a visit one afternoon to watch the boats return and offload their catches.

Almeria. The provincial capital. Highlights are the Alcazaba, a 10th century Arabic fortress,  and the refuge tunnels constructed during the Spanish Civil War.

Los Millares. Archeological site of the Copper Age, dating from about 3200 BC. Los Millares is located not far from Almeria city.

Granada. Fabled city of the Nazrid Kingdom. The Alhambra is a true jewel. The city can be visited in one day but is better appreciated in a two-day trip (relax in the Arab Baths after a day’s sightseeing and catch a flamenco show in the Gypsy Quarter).
